Will Rogers has been named the starting quarterback for the Washington Huskies, continuing his collegiate career after a successful stint at Mississippi State. Head Coach Jedd Fisch announced the decision on Monday, emphasizing Rogers’ veteran experience and leadership as key factors in the choice.
During a press conference, Fisch highlighted Rogers’ maturity and command of the game, qualities he believes are crucial for leading a young Huskies team this season.
“From the very beginning, Will showed a command and maturity. With a team of inexperience, it’s invaluable to have someone with his level of experience at quarterback,” Fisch stated. “Will has demonstrated great leadership and a strong grasp of our offense, improving consistently each day.”
Rogers, who transferred to Washington after a record-setting four years at Mississippi State, brings impressive stats with him: 1,301 completions at a 69.3% rate, 12,315 yards, 94 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions. His decision to join the Huskies came after entering the transfer portal last December, where he was ranked as the No. 15 QB and No. 80 overall player in On3’s 2024 Transfer Portal Top Players.
Rogers secured the starting position after a competitive battle with Demond Williams Jr., a fellow transfer and former top recruit who followed Fisch from Arizona. Despite the competition, Fisch noted that the two quarterbacks have developed a strong bond.
“(Rogers) had someone really talented nipping at his heels every day,” Fisch remarked. “They make a great pair and have built a solid friendship through it all.”
Rogers’ commitment to the Huskies, even amidst a coaching change, has paid off as he prepares to lead the team in their season opener against Weber State this weekend.
“In the end, we felt like, for this game and this moment, Will was the right guy to lead the team,” Fisch concluded.
