Ezaya Tokio: Washington’s New Defensive Anchor in the Making

The University of Washington football program just added a name Huskies fans should get familiar with: Ezaya Tokio.

At 6’4″ and over 200 pounds, Tokio isn’t your typical high school linebacker prospect. A product of Oceanside High School in San Diego, California, he only saw limited action during his junior season due to transfer rules. Yet even in just four games, he recorded 28 tackles, 10.5 tackles-for-loss, and 7.5 sacks — numbers that caught the eyes of recruiters from around the West and beyond.

After visits to UCLA, Arizona State, Cal, and Michigan State, Tokio made his decision official on July 1, 2025, announcing his commitment to the Washington Huskies. According to Tokio, his choice wasn’t just about football.

“The biggest reason why I committed … I went to church camp and I talked to God,” Tokio shared in a recent interview.

That mindset — blending athletic ambition with spiritual purpose — sets Tokio apart. It also speaks to the kind of culture head coach Jedd Fisch and defensive coordinator William Inge are building at Montlake.

On the field, Tokio brings a rare combination of length, speed, and versatility. He’s expected to play both inside and outside linebacker in Washington’s defensive scheme, offering flexibility that’s increasingly valuable in today’s college game.

Huskies recruiting insiders view Tokio as the first key piece of the 2026 defensive class. His commitment comes at an important time, following the de-commitment of another linebacker prospect earlier this summer. Tokio’s pledge helps steady the program’s momentum heading into the fall.

For Huskies fans, the takeaway is clear: Ezaya Tokio may not have the national headlines yet, but his potential upside is undeniable. Keep an eye on him this fall as he enters his senior season at Oceanside High — and get ready to see him in purple and gold starting in 2026.

At Huskies Central, we’ll continue tracking Ezaya Tokio’s progress and provide exclusive updates as he prepares to join the Dawgs.

Stay tuned.
