SEATTLE — It is an unusual way to begin a college football season.
No warm-up game. No lower-division opponent. No opportunity to spend a week easing a new roster into September.
Instead, Washington opens the 2026 season Sunday afternoon at Husky Stadium against Washington State in the 118th Apple Cup.
The oddsmakers believe this one should belong comfortably to the Huskies. No. 17 Washington enters as roughly a 23.5-point favorite, with the total sitting around 50.5 to 51.5 points depending on the sportsbook. Washington is also an overwhelming moneyline favorite, with prices well north of -2000 at most books.
That spread feels too large for an Apple Cup.
Washington should win this football game. But expecting the Huskies to immediately look like a finished product — particularly in a season opener against an opponent that has spent an entire offseason preparing for this moment — may be asking too much.
The Game
Washington State Cougars at No. 17 Washington Huskies
Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026
Husky Stadium — Seattle
Kickoff: 1:00 p.m. PT
TV: NBC / Peacock
Washington enters the season ranked No. 17, while Washington State begins a new chapter under head coach Kirby Moore, the Cougars’ third head coach in three seasons. Former UC Davis quarterback Caden Pinnick is expected to make his first start for WSU.
For Washington, everything begins with Demond Williams Jr.
Williams gives the Huskies something that can destroy a defensive game plan: a quarterback capable of beating you with his arm, extending plays outside the pocket and turning broken plays into significant gains with his legs.
If Washington’s offensive line gives Williams reasonable protection, the Cougars will have difficulty containing him for four quarters.
But this may not be the offensive explosion the betting line suggests.
Why Washington State Can Keep It Interesting
The easiest assumption is that Washington simply overwhelms WSU with superior talent.
Eventually, that may happen.
But Washington State’s best chance is making this an ugly football game early.
The Cougars’ defensive front may be their strongest unit, particularly with edge defenders Matyius McClain and Linuz Zunk capable of creating pressure. WSU also enters the game with legitimate talent at running back, giving Moore an opportunity to shorten the game if the Cougars can establish the run.
That is exactly what Washington State needs.
Run the football.
Drain the clock.
Avoid turnovers.
Force Washington into long third downs.
And, most importantly, stay within one possession into the second half.
The longer WSU remains close, the more pressure shifts toward Washington.
Washington’s Biggest Advantage
The quarterback position.
There may not be a more important difference between these teams.
Williams is an established playmaker playing at home. Pinnick will be making his first FBS start against a ranked opponent, inside Husky Stadium, in the Apple Cup.
Washington’s defensive objective should be straightforward: make Pinnick uncomfortable immediately.
Bring pressure.
Disguise coverage.
Force him into third-and-long situations.
If Washington can eliminate WSU’s running game and make Pinnick throw 35 or 40 times, the advantage swings heavily toward the Huskies.
Washington State cannot afford giveaways in this game.
The Number That Matters
The betting market says Washington -23.5.
I wouldn’t lay it.
Washington State went 9-4 against the spread last season, while Washington finished 6-6 ATS. More importantly, rivalry games frequently refuse to cooperate with point spreads this large.
Washington doesn’t need to win by four touchdowns.
It needs to win the Apple Cup.
And there is a difference.
Expect Jedd Fisch to establish the running game, let Williams gradually take control and avoid giving the Cougars cheap opportunities.
This feels more like a game Washington methodically controls than one it blows open in the first quarter.
What I’m Watching
1. Washington’s offensive line
Can the Huskies consistently handle WSU’s defensive front? If Williams has time, Washington should eventually create explosive plays.
2. Demond Williams’ legs
WSU can cover everything correctly and still lose the play. Williams’ ability to escape pressure may ultimately become the difference.
3. Caden Pinnick under pressure
Washington should test the new Cougar quarterback immediately. The Huskies don’t necessarily need sacks; hurried throws and uncomfortable decisions will be enough.
4. Turnovers
This is Washington State’s pathway to an upset. If the Huskies finish even or better in turnover margin, WSU will have difficulty winning.
5. The first quarter
Don’t be surprised if this game is frustratingly close early.
Something like 3-0, 7-3 or 7-0 after the opening quarter wouldn’t concern me.
Washington’s depth should become more noticeable as the afternoon progresses.
Huskies Central Prediction
There will probably be moments Sunday when Husky fans wonder why Washington isn’t putting Washington State away.
That’s rivalry football.
The Cougars will play aggressively, their defensive front will create some problems, and Washington may need a quarter or two before its offense begins operating efficiently.
But over four quarters, Washington has too many advantages.
Williams makes several critical plays outside structure. Washington’s defense eventually forces Pinnick into a mistake. And the Huskies put together a late scoring drive that removes any realistic chance of another Apple Cup upset at Husky Stadium.
Washington wins.
Washington State covers.
And the Huskies begin 2026 at 1-0.
