The Huskies, who ended their previous season with a heartbreaking loss to Michigan in the national championship game, secured the 2nd spot overall. However, despite their recent success, they find themselves ranked 32nd heading into the 2024 season—a shocking outcome for a team that was so recently on the brink of glory.
Several factors have contributed to the Huskies’ unexpected drop in the rankings. According to experts, the departure of three key players has significantly impacted the team’s prospects. Star wide receiver Rome Odunze signed with the Chicago Bears, Heisman finalist quarterback Michael Penix Jr. joined the Atlanta Falcons, and offensive lineman Troy Fautanu now plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers. These losses, combined with the departure of Head Coach Kevin DeBoer, who took the head coaching job at Alabama, have left the team in a state of flux.
Adding to the challenge, the Huskies also face a new landscape in college football. With the breakup of the PAC-12, UW will now compete in the expanded 16-team BIG 10, facing powerhouses like Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Wisconsin. To make matters worse for Husky fans, their rival Oregon is ranked 3rd in the preseason poll, adding salt to the wound.
However, there is still hope on the horizon for the Huskies. Jedd Fisch, the former Arizona head coach, has taken over the reins. Fisch, who turned around an underperforming Arizona program and led them to a 10-3 record last season, brings a fresh perspective and a few key players from his previous team through the transfer portal.
The Huskies will kick off their 2024 season in Seattle against Big Sky Conference opponent Weber State on August 30th. While the road ahead may be challenging, Husky fans are hopeful that the team can overcome the odds and once again rise to national prominence.
