Weather and Players Shine on Day 1

The University of Washington football team experienced a day of transformation as they kicked off their first fall camp practice, which paralleled the changing weather from overcast to sunny. Under the guidance of coach Jedd Fisch, the team engaged in a lively two-hour session on Wednesday. The debut of several impressive newcomers caught the attention of all in attendance. Fisch expressed his enthusiasm for the next 30 days, describing this period as a “distraction-free time” focused entirely on football, akin to “living in a submarine.”

Notably, safeties Justin Harrington and Chris Broussard, transfers from Oklahoma and Sacramento State, respectively, showcased their long, lean builds and quick mobility. They were likened to a leaner version of Dom Hampton. Logan Sagapolu, a 6-foot-2, 368-pound transfer from Miami, transitioned from offensive guard to nose tackle, making an imposing presence on the field. Another Miami transfer, Jayden Wayne, has bulked up to 262 pounds as an edge rusher, adding depth to an experienced group.

Perhaps the most captivating newcomer was offensive tackle Maximus McCree, who transferred from Maryland and Iowa Central Community College. Despite not playing since 2022 due to family issues, McCree stood out with his 6-foot-6 frame, appearing taller and leaner than his listed 272 pounds.

The practice concluded with goal-line snaps, featuring a top-tier offensive line that included redshirt freshman Soane Faasolo and transfers from Ohio State and San Diego State, among others. Another lineup included McCree and various freshmen and transfer players. Freshman Jake “Moose” Hylkema and other freshmen and walk-ons also got playtime. Sophomore Landen Hatchett, recovering from a knee injury, participated but was still limited. However, sophomore defensive tackle Armon Parker was absent due to a spring knee injury, and his twin Jayvon also had limited participation.

The Huskies are scheduled for another training session on Thursday morning.
